Ricasso

The dull portion of a blade just above the hilt which is designed for wrapping the index finger around. This gives greater tip control. It is not found on all swords but many Bastard swords, cut & thrust swords, and rapiers will have it. One a Two-Handed sword it is called a false-grip and allows the second hand to grip and hold on.
